Betel nut imports restricted to M'lore Port

The Government has restricted entry point for betel nuts import to only Mangalore Port, following allegations of large scale smuggling of the commodity into the country.

NEW DELHI: The Government has restricted entry point for betel nuts import to only Mangalore Port, following allegations of large scale smuggling of the commodity into the country.

The Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification in this regard.

However, betel nuts coming from Nepal would be allowed into the country through Jogbani and Panitanki land customs stations, the DGFT said in a notification.

The restriction will be applicable to betel nuts of all categories such as whole, split and ground.

Major cooperative bodies of betel nut (arecanut) growers last month had demanded a CBI inquiry into illegal import of the commodity into the country leading to a drop in prices.

The growers had demanded action against illegal imports and fixation of a base price as happened in edible oil imports.

Shantaram Hegde, Chairman of Karnataka-based Totgars' Cooperative Sales Society, which is representing Betlenut Agriculture Cooperative Societies, had said that the crisis in betel nut market would directly affect the economic conditions of the growers in Karnataka and Kerela.

He had alleged that most of the importers report under-invoicing in the trade where about 60,000 tons brought into the country every year.
