KOLKATA: As bird flu raged, the West Bengal government on Thursday brought egg traders those whose birds had died or culled within the ambit of compensation benefit. Earlier, those whose birds had died and egg traders were not entitled to compensation.

For this, two committees would function at the district and block levels under the district magistrate and BDO, according to chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Poultry farmers, who did not fall within the affected district, would not be paid compensation, animal resources development minister Anisur Rahman said after the chief minister held a video conference with the district magistrates of the 13 bird flu-affected districts to review the situation and assess the extent of loss.

He added there was no case of human infection. Personnel engaged in culling would be quarantined for 10 days and would be administered Tamilflu to ensure that they were free from infection, he indicated. He said the overall situation had improved while the target of culling had been increased from 25 lakh to 28 lakh birds which would be completed in the next two days.
