Basmati rice export to cross 10 LT mark
Basmati rice export is poised to cross one million tonne mark for the second consecutive year in 2005-06.
"Basmati export is once again poised to cross one million tonne in 2005-06," Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) Chairman K S Money told reporters here.
Till February 2006, basmati export had already crossed one million tonne mark and stood at 11.4 lakh tonne, which has been valued at Rs 2,775 crore.
"For entire last fiscal, the basmati export would be more than 11.5 lakh tonne export registered in 2004-05," he said.
APEDA products account for about 46 per cent of the total agricultural exports, valued at Rs 16,254 crore in 2004-05.
Recently notified super basmati rice variety would also raise the export level in coming years, he added.
India's share in global basmati rice trade would depend on the provisions related to geographical identification under TRIPS regime, and not alone on patent and trademark rights, he said.
APEDA has so far successfully fought 260 cases at various global forum to protect India's interest under the porovision of geographical area identification for basmati rice.
The traditional destination, Saudi Arabia happened to be the main destination last year and accounted for nearly 60 per cent of the total export volume. Middle East accounted for 72 per cent of the total export share.
The European Union followed with a share of around 15 per cent with the United Kingdom accounting for around 10 per cent share.
