Basmati prices fall on government's measures, subdued demand

Wholesale rice prices fell up to Rs 230 per quintal in the national capital today after the government announced further measures to curb rising commodity prices.

NEW DELHI: Wholesale rice prices fell up to Rs 230 per quintal in the national capital today after the government announced further measures to curb rising commodity prices.

On the other hand, wheat and other grains continued to trade around previous level in the absence of worthwhile activity as traders adopted a cautious approach.

Traders said sentiments turned somewhat weak after the government raised PDS supplies by allocating additional 10 kg of wheat and rice per family for January and February to curb spiralling prices.

In the rice basmati section, basmati common prices fell by Rs 230, or 3.46 per cent, to Rs 6,400-6,500 per quintal.

Among non-basmati rice, permal wand and sela fell by Rs 30 each at Rs 1,720-1,870 and Rs 23,45-2,395 per quintal, respectively.
