Arrival of imported pulses hold prices
Government's efforts to control prices of pulses through imports seem to have yielded results.
Public sector agencies have so far brought in 2.27 lakh tons of pulses to the country out of 10.38 lakh tons contracted for imports.
The government in April had instructed four public sector agencies -- STC, MMTC, PEC and NAFED -- to import 15 lakh tons of pulses comprising urad, moong, masoor, chana, yellow peas (white matar) and tur (arhar) by end-2007.
STC led the list of importers with 97,831 tons of urad and yellow peas followed by MMTC which brought in 77,387 tons of various pulses.
PEC and NAFED have so far imported 15,256 tons and 36,157 tons respectively.
Yellow peas top the the imported pulses list with a contract of 7.68 lakh tons while 1.18 lakh tons arrived at ports till July 12.
Meanwhile, agricultural commodity prices monitored by the Consumer Affairs Ministry remained steady in different centres across the country in the week ended July 13, an official release said.
Chana prices remained steady over the week across most of the centers. However, an increase in chana rates reported at Chennai, Hyderabad and Agartala.
Among the other pulses, arhar dal prices were also steady at majority of the centres except in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore where they increased.
