Rishikesh catapulted to fame when the Beatles dropped by for a visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Ashram. Since then, there is no looking back for this town. It lies in the foothills of the Himalayas of the Garhwal region and is also a gateway to the upper Garhwal region and the starting point for the Char Dham pilgrimage. Apart from being an ideal destination for pilgrims, there are several tourists who seek adventure, meditation, yoga who flock to Rishikesh. Situated 24 kms upstream from Haridwar, Rishikesh is strategically located at the confluence of the Chandrabhaga and Ganga and surrounded by scenic beauty of hills on three sides. It is considered to be sacred in Hinduism if you meditate in this town. There are many temples — some ancient, some new along the River Ganges. The River side is dotted by the ashrams of sages.

For adventure seekers Rishikesh is the suggested place for starting their trekking expeditions to the Himalayan Peaks and for White River Rafting. The International Yoga Festival will be held from March 1 to 7, 2016 in Rishikesh. This festival attracts participants from across the world, every year on the banks of the holy Ganga.
