WHAT DOES UTTARAYAN MEAN?
Hindu scriptures mention Uttarayan as the period between Makar Sankranti (which currently occurs around January 14) and Karka Sankranti (which currently occurs around July 16). The term Uttarayana is derived from two different Sanskrit words ‘uttara’ (North) and ‘ayana’ (movement) thus indicating a northward movement of the Sun on the celestial sphere.This movement occurs during the six-month period between the solstice that occurs around December 22, and the solstice around June 21.
WHAT DOES DAKSHINAYAN STAND FOR?
The complement of Uttarayan is Dakshinayan. It is the period between Karka Sankranti and Makar Sankranti as per the sidereal zodiac and between the Summer solstice and Winter solstice as per the tropical zodiac.
