UMBRIA
Region:
Italy

Umbria is known for sun-soaked hilltop villages, lush landscapes, olive groves and world-famous vineyards. Every region has their own specialties and Umbria is known for a number of food delights. Umbria relies strongly on seasonal produce such as mushrooms, wild asparagus, and numerous other fresh vegetables, and of course on the highly prized truffles that grow throughout the region. One of its best known gems are tartufo nero, black truffles. They are a quite distinct taste with their intense aromatics and powerful flavours.

Pork is quite common throughout this region as well. Beans, including lentils and farro, are most popular in the town of Castelluccio di Norcia. Umbria is known for an abundance of meat dishes, particularly lamb, pork, and game, either grilled over the fire or cooked on the spit with an abundance of herbs, but is probably most famous for its roast-suckling pig.

Beans, including lentils and farro, are popular items on menu.

To top it all, chocolate lovers must visit the chocolate festival in October in Perugia or year round one can make a stop at the Perugina factory for some fresh samples. Wine plays an important part in Umbrian cuisine. Umbria’s most famous wine may be its white wine produced from grechetto grapes, but its red wines, particularly the Sagrantino di Montefalco, is quickly catching up in popularity.
