Quick getaways: Three close-to-home picturesque destinations
Want to go on a vacation but don't have time? Pack your bags and jet-off to some beautiful locales that are not very far from your home.

A dose of history can turn out to be a good idea over the weekend. Head to Ratangad Fort in Ratanwadi, Maharashtra that overlooks the locale of Bhandardara, one of the oldest artificial catchment area. The fort is about 2,000 years old. Hikers like this spot as Ratangad has a natural rock peak with a cavity in it at the top, which is called 'Nedhe' (Eye of the Needle). Ratangad was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle many years ago and the base village Ratanwadi became popular due to its Amruteshwar Temple here. The carvings inside are truly interesting. This temple is said to date back to the Hemadpant Era, roughly from the eighth century. Enjoy a boat ride to Ratanwadi from Bhandardara.

The Namdroling Monastery is home to the spectacular Golden Temple, presided over by an 18m-high goldplated Buddha. It's architectural beauty will leave you speechless. The temple goes abuzz with activity when school is in session and it rings out with gongs, drums and chanting of hundreds of young novices. The Zangdogpalri Temple , a similarly ornate affair, is next door. Even an entire day is full of surreal surprises.
