Hemmed in by the snow-capped Himalayan mountain range, Palampur provides a lush green landscape, which has earned it the moniker, ‘the tea capital of north India’.
Located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, the town is about 50km from Dharamsala (which is considered a preferred stay option by the Dalai Lama). This makes it a famous religious destination as well. In fact, Palampur and Dharamsala are both an ideal summer volunteering destination.
Various organisations offer a series of volunteering programmes to choose from such as the mini-break programme, dental elective, medical programme, and many others.
Volunteering programs such as childcare and teaching project, wherein volunteers work in schools and day-care centres located in rural communities in suburban Palampur area. Residents of most of these areas represent different backgrounds and majorly comprising population from lower income groups where the standard of education is quite poor and a lot needs to be done.
Besides, there are programs that give an opportunity to help in a school for mentally-challenged and disabled children.
Volunteers working in this project get an opportunity to work in a centre providing education, care and learning opportunities to the mentallychallenged children.
