From Delhi: Hansi, Haryana

A quiet fort town — Hansi has a rich history of culture and swordmanship. Hansi is located in Haryana and tourists can either travel by road or by train. The best time to visit this town is from October to May. Legend has it that the town, Hansi once had a sword manufacturing company started by King Prithviraj Chauhan, which manufactured swords that were exported to the Middle East. Over the decades, now all that remains are innumerable forts, mosques, shrines and tombs. Tourists who are interested in ancient history should visit Hansi. An architectural interest of this town is the Barsi (South) Gate. It was constructed in 1304 by Alauddin Khilji. Another popular tourist spot here is the Asigarh Fort, which is spread over 30 acres and has over 80 forts that stand around it and the statues of Buddha and Mahavira are present outside the fort.

Must-try: Lastly, when you are at Hansi don’t forget to buy Peda, a milk-based sweet that is hugely popular.

Word of caution: There aren’t a lot of staying options in Hansi, so it’s better to book in advance.

From Bangalore: Honnemaradu, Karnataka

Honnemaradu, also known as, eSharavathi Back watersf is a place which is beautiful and tranquil. The road that takes you to the place provides awesome views of the hills that overlook the Linganamakki Reservoir. Tucked in the lush greenery of the Western Ghats on one side and huge waterfalls on the other, it presents an amazing sight, almost like an unending sea.

Nearby attractions: Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River. The water plummets down from a great height of 829 ft, considered to be the highest in India. Located 30 kms from Jog Falls, Dabbe is another enchanting waterfall in Sagara. This waterfall is hidden in the mountains near Hosagadde.

Adventure junkies: Kayaking in Honnemaradu is a unique experience, as the kayaks are round and cannot travel very far. Kayaking is permitted only with a guide.

Nature-lovers paradise: Honnemardu is a birdwatchers paradise and one can spend endless hours watching and trying to identify the large variety of birds and butterflies.
