You must have heard about the legendary tales about the powers of River Ganga. And it’s about time now you witness its glory on a momentous day. Make your way to attend the annual Ganga Dusera fest, which will be observed on May 28, 2015.

By the famed ghats of Varanasi or Benaras (and also Haridwar, Rishikesh, Prayag and Garh Mukteshwar), amidst hundreds of pilgrims, the priests perform aarti to Goddess Ganga. Loud chants, glimmering diyas on leaf boats on the waters and aroma of fresh flowers and incense rises in the air and can leave one mesmerised for hours.

It is believed that a dip in the Ganga can make your mind clearer and quieter (not to forget the mention of age-old belief about washing off one’s sins). If you refer to the scriptures, River Ganga is valued religiously. It is also a source of livelihood to many people. Ganga Dusera attracts scores of foreign tourists who love to come and visit the Taj Mahal in Agra, practise yoga (Rishikesh plays host to International Yoga Week from March 1-7, 2015) and also include a trip to Benaras to embrace its spiritual vibes. Local fairs in Varanasi, Haridwar, Mathura and Allahabad are major attractions.
