What: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple complex was built in the 11th century by the Chola Dynasty rulers in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

Fascinating notes: The architecture of this temple boasts of a 9-storey vimanam that extends to the height of 185 feet. Facing the east direction, Gangaikonda Cholapuram exposes huge sculptures and carvings. Not less than 54.86m in height, the temple structure follows the style of Brihadisvara Temple.

The whole temple is thrived with rich and intricate carvings that are exclusive to Chola style of artistry in granite stone. The figurines that you can see here include the Dancing Nataraja and a peaceful Saraswati. Statues of Lord Shiva and Parvati along with Ardhanareshwar (the man-woman manifestation of Lord Shiva) and Ganesha are popular attractions.

Nandi guards on... Nandi (or Siva's Bull) gigantic statue is situated right in the entrance of the Mahamandapa. And unlike a single stone carving, appears to have been constructed with brick stones and mortar as evident by the cracks.
