INSOMNIAC ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL 2015

WINTER TOURISM EXHIBITION

To mark the jubilee '150 years of Winter Tourism' this year, the St. Moritz Design Gallery is displaying a collection of posters depicting winter in St. Moritz. The exhibition presents a colourful selection of posters which reflect a sporty, cultural and vibrant town.

St Moritz has been a popular tourist destination among celebrities, industrialists and discerning tourists. The town’s shimmering aquamarine lake, emerald forests and aloof mountains are its main attractions.

The posters on display are from the extensive collection of the St. Moritz Archives and also show the development of graphic design from the oldest poster of William Burger designed for the major 1911 Ski Race, through to the current designs of the renowned illustrator Christoph Niemann. The exhibition is open for public till June 30, 2015.

HEMIS FESTIVAL

When: July 7 & 8, 2015

In the month of July, Ladakh wakes up from a long and harsh winter. This is the time when tourists from India and abroad arrive to trek mountains, go river-rafting and be in awe of Indo-Tibetan culture.

Plan your trip to coincide with the Hemis Festival which is held at the Hemis Gompa, the largest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh. Hemis is home to more than 500 monks and at the time of the festival plays host to hundreds of eager devotees, local villagers and tourists.

The two-day festival commemorates the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, who founded Tantric Buddhism in Tibet. These days are marked by prayers and the display of an age-old thangka (religious painting) which is just one of the treasures housed at Hemis.

All through the festival, traditional dances are performed by masked monks. The dances which are accompanied by cymbals, drums and trumpets, portray the triumph of good over evil. During the Hemis festival, hawkers and shopkeepers set up stalls outside the monastery, selling a variety of wares most of them are souvenirs.

JANMASHTAMI

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna one of Hindusim's most popular and beloved deities. According to belief, Krishna was born at midnight on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapad.

The day before Janmashtami is one of prayer and fasting, which continues till midnight and beyond, when an idol of the god is placed in a cradle and rocked. Head to Mathura and Vrindavan, and regions following Vaishnavism in Manipur to witness a grand celebration.
