Visit soon: Tourists walk through the ruins of the ancient Roman site of Volubilis, near the town of Moulay Idriss Zerhounon in Morocco’s north central Meknes region. Situated in the centre of a fertile plain at the foot of Mount Zerhoun, the towering remains of Morocco’s oldest Roman site, Volubilis, were said to be long neglected. However, after decades now, custodians of the now closely-guarded ancient city are turning the page and attracting back tourists.

Back on the unchartered list of eager tourists is the ancient site of Volubilis. According to the UNESCO World Heritage List, Volubilis contains essentially Roman vestiges of a fortified municipium built on a commanding site at the foot of the Jebel Zerhoun. Its pillars have graphic illustration of the interface between the Roman and indigenous cultures.

The archeological vestiges of this site bear witness to several civilisations. All the phases of its ten centuries of occupation, from pre-history to the Islamic period are represented. The site has been home to artistic material, including mosaics, marble and bronze statuary apart from many inscriptions. It is said that the ready documentation and also which remains to be discovered, is depictive of the creative spirit of human race that thrived here over the ages.
