Zomato requests customers to not order food during afternoon hours; netizens say 'close down the services': Here's why

Amid the intense summer heat sweeping across India, food delivery giant Zomato has urged its customers to refrain from ordering food during peak afternoon hours unless absolutely necessary. This request, made through a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), has sparked a range of reactions from users.

In a message posted on June 2, Zomato wrote, "Please avoid ordering during peak afternoon unless absolutely necessary."



The post quickly went viral, garnering over 1.2 million views and more than 12,000 likes. However, the response from the public has been mixed.

Social Media Reactions

The plea drew varied opinions from social media users. One user commented, "Bro, you are in food services, and people order food when it is absolutely necessary. If you actually care about your employees, you would be posting, 'Our services are unavailable during peak afternoon hours.'"


Another user suggested, "Close down the services between 12 to 4. It's okay to be human sometimes before profits. Yeah, we won't order, but still, closure from you will do more good."

Some users appreciated the sentiment behind the request. One commented, "I was thinking the same thing today, then decided to eat Maggi instead of ordering online."

Another wrote, "I hope you consider doubling delivery charges during peak hours or suspending services altogether. Either way, prioritizing your riders' well-being is what you are talking about. Or you can mandate a minimum tip!"

Heatwave Conditions in India

The current heatwave has affected several parts of the country, particularly in the north and central regions. On May 29, Delhi's Mungeshpur recorded a staggering temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius. The extreme heat has caused significant discomfort and disruption to daily life.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a slight dip in temperatures due to expected rainfall in several states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
