Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu urged Indians abroad, especially in the US, to return home, citing a shift in American perception and the link between India's economic strength and global respect. He emphasized that redirecting India's intellectual cap...

At the same time, he pointed out a growing shift in perception within sections of American society, where Indians are sometimes viewed as competitors who have displaced local workers. Although such opinions may not represent everyone, he suggested they are becoming increasingly noticeable. He cautioned that political developments may not necessarily resolve these sentiments, as ideological divisions within the country continue to deepen, leaving immigrant communities largely caught in the middle.
Vembu emphasized that global regard for Indians is closely tied to India’s own economic strength and progress. If the country struggles with poverty, he argued, it risks being judged either with condescension or criticism rather than genuine respect. In contrast, true recognition in today’s world, according to him, stems from technological advancement, economic stability, and national security.
He further noted that India possesses immense intellectual capability but has historically seen a large portion of its skilled workforce move abroad. Redirecting this talent back into the country could significantly accelerate innovation and development. By strengthening its technological capabilities, India can reinforce its civilizational identity and establish a more influential global presence.
Recognizing that returning home may not be an easy decision for many, Vembu still urged overseas Indians to consider contributing their expertise to the country’s growth. He highlighted the importance of guiding India’s vast young population with the experience and leadership gained internationally, encouraging a sense of purpose and dedication toward nation-building.
According to Forbes, his personal wealth is estimated at around $6 billion. He is an alumnus of IIT Madras.
