Youtuber Emma Chamberlain faces criticism for wearing 'stolen' Maharaja of Patiala's diamond choker to Met Gala

YouTuber Emma Chamberlain had hoped to steal the limelight with her Met Gala 2022 'Gilded glamour' look, and she did that too - but for the wrong reasons.

Sticking to this year's 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion' theme, the internet personality decided to show up in an iconic ensemble for the grand event.

The 20-year-old went platinum blonde and sported a beige-coloured corset and white skirt by Louis Vuitton. She paired it with a dazzling diamond tiara and choker by Cartier Jewel, the brand's latest ambassador. However, she faced harsh criticism for reportedly wearing Maharaja of Patiala's diamond choker to the gala.

In 1928, Patiala's Maharaja decided to turn the world's seventh-largest diamond, the De Beers diamond, into a necklace. He hired Cartier to make a necklace. The necklace mysteriously disappeared after his son Maharaja Yadavindra Singh last wore it in 1948.

An Instagram handle on Indian History, @the_indian_crusader, shared a few insights about the Patiala necklace. It said that the necklace incorporated some 2,930 diamonds, including the world's seventh largest diamond worth 234.69 carat, along with seven other diamonds which ranged from 18 to 73 carats, and a few Burmese rubies.

"Twenty years after its completion, this amazing item seems to have disappeared. The likely story is that, over time, the more important stones were removed and sold. Eventually, the 'De Beers' reappeared and was sold in 1982 for over three million dollars," the caption read.

Touted as the famous Patiala necklace, it reappeared in London and disappeared for some time before it was bought by Cartier again. While it has not yet been substantiated that the choker was 'stolen', netizens took to social media thought it was 'disrespectful'.


Some even stood in support of Cartier, saying that the jewellery brand only restored the necklace with cubic zirconia since it doesn't have any of the original jewels.

Many claimed that Chamberlain wearing the stolen jewel was worse than Kim Kardashian in Marilyn Monroe's dress.
