'You're not that smart': Samantha Ruth Prabhu says she always had to fight for validation from childhood

In a moment that revealed the quiet strength behind her stardom, Samantha Ruth Prabhu opened up about an intensely personal memory—one where she was forced to wear a smile while her heart was silently breaking.

Just days ago, Samantha recounted an incident from last December when she received the shattering news of her father Joseph Prabhu’s passing. She was in Mumbai at the time and had to rush to Chennai immediately. Emotionally numb, she boarded the first available flight. As she sat silently in shock, unable to fully process the loss, fans unaware of her turmoil began approaching her for pictures.

Speaking with Galatta Plus, she shared, “I never turn down photo requests because I deeply respect the people who have made me who I am. That morning, I got a call from my mother. She told me that my father had passed away. I was in complete disbelief. I hadn’t spoken to him in a while, and hearing the news froze something inside me.”


Even in that state of emotional paralysis, Samantha continued to pose, smile, and interact with fans on the flight. “I remember standing up and taking all those pictures… smiling through it. I didn’t want to refuse anyone because they had no idea what I was going through.”

Her explanation was deeply empathetic. “It takes courage to approach someone for a photo. If I say ‘no,’ they might not understand. They don’t know I’ve just lost my father.” That moment, however, forced her to confront a harsh reality of being a celebrity. “That day it struck me—no regular person is expected to smile right after losing a parent. It made me realize how different our world is.”

Samantha’s father passed away in November. Despite their complicated relationship, she paid tribute with a quiet, heartfelt note on Instagram: “Until we meet again, Dad.” She had earlier revealed the emotional distance between them in an interview with Hindustan Times, admitting, “I had to constantly seek validation from him. Growing up, I was told things like, ‘You’re not that smart,’ or that my school achievements were only because the bar was low.”

That persistent need for approval followed her into adulthood. “Even when my debut film became a hit, I didn’t know how to accept praise. I had been conditioned to believe I wasn’t good enough.”
