Holi, a joyous and vibrant festival, is celebrated with great enthusiasm. However, it is essential to take proper care of the eyes to avoid any complications or damage during this festive season.
To help keep your eyes safe and healthy during and after the festive celebrations, here are some essential pre- and post-Holi eye care tips.
Pre-Holi Eye Care Tips
Wear protective eyewear While playing Holi, it is crucial to wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes from water and colours. Glasses or sunglasses with polycarbonate lenses provide the best protection.
Moisturise your eyes Before starting your Holi celebrations, moisturise your eyes with artificial tear drops or lubricating eye drops to prevent dryness and irritation.
Trim your nails If you plan to join the festive celebrations, make sure you trim your nails before you step out. Long nails can scratch the eyes or cause infections.
Avoid wearing contact lenses Avoid wearing contact lenses for your Holi celebrations. The coloured water can get trapped under your lenses and cause infections or irritation.

Supervise children Children should always be supervised by an adult while playing Holi. Instruct them to not throw colours directly at someone's face or in the eyes.
Use child-friendly colours It is essential to use child-friendly and non-toxic colours for children as there is a high possibility of the colours going into their eyes. Harmful chemicals can cause serious eye irritation and infections. Wishing you a happy and safe Holi!
Post-Holi Eye Care Tips
Wash your eyes thoroughly After playing Holi, it is important to wash your eyes thoroughly with clean water to remove any colour residue that may have entered your eyes.

Cold compress If you experience any discomfort or irritation after playing Holi, use a cold compress on your eyes. This will help reduce inflammation and soothe your eyes.
Avoid rubbing your eyes Rubbing your eyes vigorously can cause scratches or infections. Instead, use a clean and damp cloth to wipe your eyes gently.

Discard contact lenses If you wore contact lenses for Holi celebrations, discard them immediately after use. Do not reuse them as the coloured water trapped under the lens may cause infection. After discarding contact lenses, use lubricating eye drops to soothe and moisten your eyes.
Consult an ophthalmologist If you experience any severe symptoms such as pain, redness or discharge, consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Delaying treatment can lead to permanent damage to your eyes. Clean glasses with solution & use a microfiber cloth If you wear glasses, clean them thoroughly after playing Holi using a recommended cleaning solution to avoid scratches on the lenses. Do not use paper towels or tissues as they scratch your glasses lenses, instead use a microfiber cloth to clean your glasses
By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable Holi experience without compromising your eye health. Wishing you a happy and safe Holi!

While so far you have an idea about what to wear for Holi, but what about your bling? If you’re a person who likes to jewel-it-up, then we suggest you keep your gold and diamonds at home, safely tucked away from harmful colours. Go for artificial jewellery. A simple neck statement piece or chunky earrings, but do avoid wearing bold rings on your hands as it might get lost or hurt you or someone else while plastering people with Holi colours.
