When you miss your mom, a video call may fix a part of you, but the longing to sit near her, see her in front of you, beats any technology. Recently, actor Anupam Kher shared an emotional moment with his mother that reminded him of this simple truth. The actor, who has been away from home, for two months now, was on a video call with his mother, when she asked him an innocent question leaving him laughing and teary-eyed. He explained why seeing his mother digitally is not the same as being with her in person.

Anupam Kher’s mother asks him a question that leaves him emotional

Sharing the conversation on X, Anupam Kher revealed that it had been almost two months since he last met his mother. He and Raju speak to her every day over FaceTime using Raju’s phone, as his mother does not want a smartphone of her own. During one such conversation, she asked when he would come home, pointing out that it had been a long time since she had seen him. She then asked him, “You haven’t forgotten what I look like, have you?”

The question made Kher laugh, but it also brought tears to his eyes. He initially found her words innocent, especially since he was looking directly at her face on the screen while they spoke. But as he thought about what she had said, he realised that she was expressing something much deeper.

Why a video call cannot replace meeting in person

Kher reflected on how his mother wanted more than just a glimpse of him through a phone. For his mother, a real meeting means being able to hug her son, sit with him and have long conversations without the screen between them.

His mother later told him to take care of himself and reassured him that everything was fine, repeating, “It’s okay… it’s okay.” But Kher felt that there was much more behind those words than she was saying aloud.

‘How could I ever forget your face, Mom?’

The conversation also prompted Kher to share how deeply his mother’s face is etched in his memory. He added that can never forget what she looked like. He described how he could close his eyes and picture countless versions of her: laughing, scolding him, worrying about him and loving him. He ended his heartfelt message with a deeply personal reflection, saying that his entire world was wrapped in the folds of his mother’s pallu.'
