Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor's return to the big screen with 'Shamshera' after four-long years didn't go as planned. The makers of the film had high hopes for the movie, but the box-office performance says another story.
After the film's release last week on Friday (July 22), social media was abuzz with criticism and a below-average response from the fans. Despite a star-studded cast, the movie failed to attract footfalls at the theatres.
Director Karan Malhotra - known for Hrithik Roshan's 'Agneepath' (2012) and Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Brothers' (2015) - finally broke his silence after his directorial tanked at the box-office.
In a heartbreaking post, the film-maker apologised for 'abandoning' the movie. He captioned his emotional note, "'Shamshera' is mine."
"My Dearest Shamshera, you are majestic the way you are. It is important for me to express myself on this platform because here is where all the love, the hate, the celebration and the humiliation exists for you," he wrote.
Malhotra shared that he had a difficult time dealing with the movie's post-release hate and rage, and left the movie in a lurch when it needed him the most. "My withdrawal was my weakness and there are no excuses for it," his note read.

After taking some time out for himself, he decided to stand by his creation. "Now I am here, standing beside you, hand-in-hand, feeling proud and honoured that you are mine. Will face everything together, the good the bad and the ugly," he added.

In the end, the 34-year-old thanked his 'Shamshera' for all the love and support. "And a huge shout out to the Shamshera family, the cast and crew of Shamshera. The love, the blessings and the concern that has been showered upon us are the most precious and nobody can take that away from us," he concluded in his note.
According to film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the Yash Raj Films production earned only Rs 31.75 crore at its opening weekend.

The movie critic said that the film will face a difficult week after its 'shockingly low weekend' business. He also said that new releases will hurt the movie's performance further. "'Shamshera' meets with a tragic fate," his post read.
