Let's get the first and most obvious reaction out of the way – yes, the design is very similar to the Apple iPhone (in particular, the 4/4S and 5/5S).

It has a stainless steel surround with a bevelled (chamfered) edge, rounded corners and even the same 'breaks' or plastic strips in the metal to allow the wireless signals through.

All this being said, the Mi 4 feels very premium and very good to hold.

For instance, we hope that Xiaomi will launch faux wood and leather back panels which will add more style.

The only thing removable is a small micro SIM card tray on the side. There is no expandable memory and no removable battery in the Mi 4 – quite like the Mi 3.

One of the criticisms of the Mi 3 still holds true with the Mi 4 – Xiaomi has only launched the 16GB version of the Mi 3 and they may repeat that with the Mi 4.

Internationally though, they do sell a 64GB version (that doesn't cost a lot more). Having both versions available would cater to both markets – those who want the best value and those who want the best.

Apart from the fantastic quality, materials and construction of the Mi 4, the highlight of the device has to be the amazing screen.

The 5-inch 1080p IPS LCD has gorgeous colours, amazing contrast and excellent viewing angles. You can also change saturation levels and colour temperature using Xiaomi's own tools.

The MIUI interface (version 6 with Android 4.4 in the Mi 4) is as responsive as ever.

As any user of the same interface on the Mi 3 may have seen, the interface is full of little tricks and easter eggs – small but useful features that are mentioned nowhere. You discover them as you go along. For instance, on the lock screen, double tapping the unlock slider brings up the music controls (on the lock screen itself).

HDR mode is particularly useful (and it processes these images fast too). Both the camera units are sourced from Sony.
