Writing podcasts isn't easy, says author Sunil Khilnani

Author and professor of politics, Sunil Khilnani, has several books to his credit, but the one thing that made the seasoned writer halt in his tracks was writing a podcast. Khilnani recently shared his experience of writing 50 Indian history stories for an international radio station.

“I think there is an illusion that a podcast is simply to turn the tape recorder on and talk. They are highly structured. Every bit of sound or voice has to help the story. The sound can’t be decorative, it somehow has to help the argument,” Khilnani said during a session at the Times Lit Fest in Mumbai. But, the 50 stories that he told, though exhausting, was a learning experience. “It was educational not just as history but educational in learning to write them as scripts,” he said.

Khilnani is thankful that he only had to do 50, even though 100 stories were earlier suggested. “I barely survived the 50. I don’t think I would be sitting here if we did 100!” he said with a laugh.
