World Sight Day: Too much screen-time at work? Easy exercises to soothe your eyes

Too much screen-time and poor lighting can contribute to computer-related eyestrain.

Does your work include staring continuously at your computer during the day? It can put immense strain on your eyes.

Too much screen-time, poor lighting, and not blinking enough can contribute to computer-related eyestrain.

Dr Kiran Kirtani, Associate Consultant at Centre for Sight, shares some simple eye-exercises that can help relieve the strain.


Blinking

The average blinking rate should be around 16-20 per minute. When an individual focuses on a visual task, the blink rate is likely to drop. And, in front of the computer screen, it can go down to 6 blinks per minute. This can further lead to dry-eye allergies and infections. In order to keep your eyes stree-free, one one must voluntarily remember to blink. Blinking for at least 20 times every two hours can help your ocular health.

Focusing

Constantly staring at a computer screen can be strenuous for eyes. Remember to take visual break and focus somewhere else. Ensure you focus away from a screen for several seconds or a minute. Aim to do this at least once an hour.

Eye-Rolling

Just like the basic neck-roll exercise, rolling your eyes can prove to be extremely beneficial for you, especially if you are sitting in front of the computer for hours. Take a minute and roll your eyes while working. Just close your eyes and roll your eyes around in circular motions. This exercise will massage, lubricate and eases the strain on the muscles around your eyes.
