Goodbye, 'Tragedy King': Big B calls Dilip Kumar an institution; director Subhash Ghai shares emotional video

The world honours the legendary actor and the rich legacy he left behind.

Veteran actor Dilip Kumar breathed his last on Wednesday after struggling with various age-related ailments.

Born as Yusuf Khan, Kumar was known to generations of film-goers as the 'Tragedy King'.

From celebrities and sports stars to India Inc leaders and politicians, the well-known personalities took to social media to say their final goodbyes to the legendary actor.


Megastar Amitabh Bachchan said he was deeply saddened by the demise of Kumar, and called him an 'institution' in himself. He further said that the history of Indian cinema will be written as 'before Dilip Kumar, and after Dilip Kumar'.



Actor Akshay Kumar said that the late actor was a 'hero' in true sense. "Dilip Kumar sir has taken an entire era of Indian cinema away with him," he wrote.

Alongside a picture of himself with Kumar, Ajay Devgn took to Twitter to say that nothing had prepared him for the veteran actor's passing away. "An institution, a timeless actor. Heartbroken," his caption read.


Sharing a 37-second video of 'Hum Mehnatkash' song from 1983 movie 'Mazdoor', actor Raj Babbar recalled his childhood hero, who inspired him to get into films. He wrote, "From an actor to an institution, you effortlessly crossed into immortality decades ago."


Anupam Kher said that Kumar's demise has orphaned Indian film industry. He further said he lost a mentor, a friend, a guide and an acting guru.

B-town celebrities like Sunny Deol, Raveena Tandon, Suniel Shetty, Manoj Bajpayee, John Abraham, Sonu Sood, Taapsee Pannu, Sidharth Malhotra and Nimrat Kaur also paid their tribute.

In a one-minute-43-second video, 'Taal' and 'Pardes' director Subhash Ghai, who closely worked with Kumar on movies like 'Vidhaata' (1982), 'Karma' (1986) and 'Saudagar' (1991), called the late actor an idol. He further mentioned that the veteran actor tranformed Ghai's life. In another post, he said it was the saddest day of his life.



'The Tashkent Files' Director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri said Kumar was the 'emperor of acting'. "Artists never die. They just change roles," he shared. While 'Aligarh' film-maker Hansal Mehta said there won't be another Dilip Kumar.



'Rang De Basanti' actor Siddharth referred to Kumar as a 'giant tree' that has fallen. "I pray today's generation learns about and celebrates him (Kumar)," he wrote.


South star Chiranjeevi said he remembers Kumar as one of the greatest actors in India, an acting institution and a national treasure.


Popular Telugu actor Jr NTR said Kumar's contribution to Indian cinema is priceless.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi Narendra Modi said that Kumar will be remembered as a cinematic legend. "He was blessed with unparalleled brilliance, due to which audiences across generations were enthralled. His passing away is a loss to our cultural world," he posted.


President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the demise of Kumar, saying his charm transcended all boundaries, and he was loved across the subcontinent.


Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal paid homage, saying the late actor's demise meant the end of an era for Bollywood.


West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that Kumar's inimitable style of acting will remain engraved among film lovers for generations.


Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel & Power and an elected MP, called it an end of an era, and thanked Kumar for the beautiful memories and his magic.


Parimal Nathwani, Director of Corporate Affairs at Reliance Industries Ltd, said he was saddened to learn about the passing away of the veteran actor. "His contribution to Indian cinema is a legacy that will live on forever," he tweeted.


From the sports fraternity, cricketer Shikhar Dhawan called Kimar an inspiration for generations to come.

Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi grieved the demise of the legendary actor.

Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer called him one of the greatest icons of the film industry. "He will live on forever through his work," he wrote.


Badminton player Saina Nehwal and commentator Harsha Bhogle also bid farewell to the legend of Hindi cinema.



Kumar, born Yousuf Khan and often known as the Nehruvian hero, did his first film 'Jwar Bhata' in 1944 and his last 'Qila' in 1998, 54 years later.

The five-decade career included 'Mughal-e-Azam', 'Devdas', 'Naya Daur', and 'Ram Aur Shyam', and later, as he graduated to character roles, 'Shakti' and 'Karma'.
