The ongoing pandemic and norm of social distancing has confined everyone to their homes and has also restricted hospital visits, unless in case of emergencies, with movement being constrained. In the absence of regular follow-ups, people may overlook signs of an impending illness which can lead to a potential health hazard. This is also true for common respiratory ailments such as asthma. Patients with asthma need to be cognizant of their health and follow a strict treatment plan to keep their allergies under control.

Asthma is a condition which causes the airways in the respiratory tract to swell, produce extra mucus and go into spasm. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

According to the World Health Organization, people with underlying conditions such as chronic lung disease, including asthma are at higher risk of Covid-19. It can impact the respiratory tract including the nose, throat, or lungs. This can cause an asthma attack or lead to pneumonia and acute respiratory disease. Therefore, it is recommended for asthma patients to stay indoors and follow certain guidelines to keep themselves safe.

While staying indoors, it is important to be on the lookout for vital triggers such as indoor allergens like dust mites, strong odours, stress during exercise, fever, running nose and disturbed sleep because of shortness of breath or wheezing.

Here are some tips asthmatic patients should follow to avoid the risk of acquiring infection:

- Clean and disinfect your home and objects that you touch quite often such as doorknobs, light switches, cell phones

- Maintain distance with those who are suffering from a cold or flu and avoid sharing personal household items like cups and towels
- Maintain low humidity in the house to reduce mold and dust mites
- Avoid smoke of any kind
- The changing weather can trigger pollen allergies and alleviate asthma symptoms. Follow your asthma treatment to keep allergies under control to prevent attacks
- Stress also can inhibit the immune system. Techniques such as meditation can help
- Limit screen time as it alleviates stress
- Eat a nutritious and well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
- Engage in physical activity as it is good for overall health and immunity

- Try to order necessary items such as groceries at home instead of stepping out
- Continue to use your regular inhaler, nasal spray and anti-allergic tablet; if you have been needing more of the rescue inhaler, get in touch with your doctor immediately

Asthma symptoms and severity are always changing. While the disease cannot be cured completely, the symptoms can be managed. Following a plan will help you avoid asthma attacks and minimise the disruptions caused by symptoms. In case you feel the onset of an attack, follow the treatment plan devised by your doctor strictly. Keep your rescue inhaler with you at all times and use it as necessary. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
