Pregnancy discrimination at the workplace continues to be a subject of debate in many countries, with employees often raising concerns about unfair treatment after revealing they are expecting. While labour laws in several regions provide protections for pregnant workers, allegations of discrimination still surface on social media from time to time. One such case has now gone viral after a woman claimed she was fired just three hours after informing her manager that she was pregnant.

The woman, who posts on X under the name "Jin," alleged that she was dismissed shortly after telling her manager about her pregnancy and asking if she could bring crackers to work to deal with severe morning sickness. She shared screenshots that she said showed the message she sent to her manager and the termination letter she received around three hours later. The post has since attracted widespread attention, with many users questioning the timing of the dismissal and urging her to seek legal advice.

Woman says she only asked to bring crackers during her shift

According to the screenshots shared by Jin, she reached out to her manager before her next shift to explain that she had recently found out she was pregnant and had been struggling with constant nausea.

She wrote, "[Redacted] really looking forward to my shift tomorrow, but just wanted to be honest with you about something private. I'm really struggling at the moment with sickness since turns out I'm pregnant, my stomach is really sensitive and I'm sick from just feeling slightly hungry. Just wondering if it's okay if I bring in some crackers to nibble on during my shift? Thanks."

She said she was not asking for time off or any special treatment, only permission to keep a few crackers with her so she could manage her symptoms while working.

Termination letter cited probation period

Instead of receiving a response to her request, Jin claimed she received a formal email with the subject line "Termination of employment."

According to the letter she shared, her employment would end after a one-week notice period, with July 22 listed as her final working day. The letter stated, "The reason for your dismissal is due to not passing a probationary period. You are required to work your notice period."

It also said, "You will be paid any accrued holiday up to your date of termination. You will be paid for any outstanding hours along with your final salary." The notice added that any remaining payments would be settled once her employment came to an end.

'I trusted this manager'

In a follow-up post, Jin said she decided to tell her manager about the pregnancy because she believed the information would be treated with understanding.

She wrote, "I trusted this manager and I feel so betrayed and stupid for it. I was already hesitating saying anything but due to my sickness being so constant I was worried. I have no older figure in my life supporting me right now and I was stupid enough to think a manager I trusted at my work would be understanding and check up on me during the shift. I never asked for time off, just an update on the life of one of her employees."

She later added that she did not intend to work through the notice period.

Why she felt the need to ask permission

After one social media user questioned why she needed approval just to eat crackers at work, Jin explained that her workplace had recently introduced a stricter food policy.

According to her, employees had been told they could not eat staff food until they had completed six hours of work and reached their unpaid 20-minute break. She said staff had previously been allowed to pick food from the restaurant during their shifts, but the rules had changed. Because of that, she wanted to make sure she would not be reprimanded for stepping into the hallway every 20 minutes to eat a cracker to help with her nausea.

Social media users react

The post quickly spread across X, with many users expressing shock over the alleged sequence of events. One user wrote, "WT that's insane, are you okay? Is that even legal?" Another commented, "Okay, but why would you even have to ask if you can bring snacks to work…? This is just weird."

Many others believed the timing of the dismissal raised serious concerns. One person wrote, "This isn’t even subtle anymore, that’s straight up pregnancy discrimination. Hope she sues the absolute st out of them."

Another added, "Seek legal advice and sue them. This manager is insane."

The company mentioned in the screenshots has not publicly responded to the allegations shared by Jin on X. The claims remain those of the employee, and no independent findings regarding the circumstances of her dismissal have been made public.
