'When I arrived, I was just a hatchback; I pass my legacy to my SUVW.' Polo drives off into the sunset, Volkswagen leaves a teary note for India users

India's beloved Volkswagen Polo is moving on after 12 years of 'endless acceleration'.

Car manufacturer Volkswagen India found the cutest and the most-emotional way to announce that Polo is bidding goodbye to India.

In a heartwarming resignation letter posted on social media, Polo - one of the country's most-loved hatchbacks - said that the time has come for it to hit the brakes.


"Roads are beautiful, but they all end somewhere," the letter began.

From remembering the first time it was manufactured at Pune's Chakan plant in 2009, to being surrounded by applause at the Auto Expo 2010, the 12-year-old brand recounted the special moments.

"During my unforgettable time here, I have gone places, loved people, and been invited to journeys I hadn't dreamt of before," the note read.

Suggesting that the model had 'big wheels' to fill, it stayed true to the Volkswagen brand and introduced the joys of German-engineering and the fun-to-drive experience (its key responsibilities) to India.

In this emotional note, Polo thanked the engineers for putting it together, the dealerships for displaying it with pride, the service team for patching it up every single time, and its users.

"You know, When I arrived, I was just a hatchback. But, you all made me feel like the most-loved hatchback," the caption read.

The letter also said that it is passing its legacy to SUVW (Sport Utility VolksWagen) and sedan siblings.

"Keep the fun of driving alive and keep me in your hearts. Until next time. Yours playfully, Polo," the letter concluded.

The post on LinkedIn was liked by 3,618 people, and the Twitter update got over 200 retweets and 1,100 likes.

The emotional post attracted a lot of comments, and most users wondered the reason for discontinuing the model. Many fans took to social media to share their experience as a proud Polo owner.

A couple of days ago, the official Twitter handle of Volkswagen India asked Polo to have a heart-to-heart with its fans for years.

In reply, Polo said that 12 years flew by in a blink of a headlight.

"I'm beyond grateful for all the love I've received over these years. Today, as I take on this stage, I cannot wait to have a heart-to-heart with all of you," the caption read.


Days before the announcement, Volkswagen launched a special edition of its hatchback Polo to mark 12 years of the model in India on Monday.

The Polo Legend edition, priced at Rs 10.25 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards, will be available on the GT TSI variant that is equipped with a 1-litre TSI engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The model generates 110 PS of power with 175 Nm torque.

To mark the iconic legacy, the edition will come with 'Legend' title on the fender and boot badge. It will also comprise side body graphics, black trunk garnish and black roof foil to accentuate the look of the carline, making it more sportier.


The limited volume Legend edition Polo will be available across the 151 Volkswagen dealerships.

With the starting of production in 2009 and its market launch in 2010, Volkswagen Polo was the first locally manufactured model at the brands' Chakan plant in Pune. The company has sold over 3 lakh units of the model in the country.
