After nearly two decades, Will Smith has officially returned to music—but his latest track isn’t just about catchy beats. The Hollywood icon and rap veteran has used his new single Beautiful Scars to revisit one of the biggest regrets of his career: turning down the lead role in The Matrix.

The video also plays into this “what if” scenario with a teaser posted on Smith’s Instagram, where a computer screen narrates his fateful decision:

"In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned it down. He chose Wild Wild West, believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?"

It ends with the haunting words: "Wake up, Will... The Matrix has you..."

Will Smith’s Regret: "I Did Y’all a Favor"

Smith has spoken before about his decision to turn down The Matrix, but Beautiful Scars marks the first time he’s addressed it creatively. In a 2019 YouTube video, Smith admitted that he initially didn’t understand the film’s vision when the Wachowskis pitched it to him.

"I wasn’t proud of it, but I had to come to terms with it," Smith admitted.

However, he also speculated that had he taken the role, it could have completely changed the casting dynamic, possibly resulting in a white actor—like Val Kilmer—being cast as Morpheus instead of Laurence Fishburne.

"Keanu was perfect. Laurence Fishburne was perfect," Smith explained. "If I had done it, they were looking at Val Kilmer for Morpheus, so I probably would have messed The Matrix up. I did y’all a favor."

The Beautiful Scars video doesn’t just lean into the “what could have been”—it also features a humorous nod to the decision.

In another Instagram teaser, Big Sean appears dressed as Morpheus, offering Smith the blue pill or the red pill, just as in the original movie. But instead of discussing reality, Sean jokes about Smith’s "awesome career choices"—except for one he truly regrets.

Smith’s return to music comes at a pivotal moment in his career. After facing public setbacks in recent years—including the infamous Oscars slap incident in 2022—he seems to be channeling self-reflection and reinvention into his art.
