Why the sports officials should throw in the towel

World No 6 tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas talks about towel’s intrinsic importance at the US Open.

Making players sprint back to their chairs for a wipe down in the middle of a game is overly cautious.
According to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a towel ‘is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have’, and after outlining its many applications, concludes, ‘you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough’.

That last quality is probably what drove overheated World No 6 tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas to let off a volley on the towel’s intrinsic importance at the ongoing sanitised, contactless, spectator-less US Open at Flushing Meadows. His point that ‘it has huge importance, the towel. I use it very often.… It gives me time to refresh myself and think about my tactics,’ serves to underline the myriad of uses that it has even for earthly activities, beyond wiping sweaty brows.

Tsitsipas also revealed a childhood attachment rather like that of Charlie Brown’s friend Linus to his blanket in the comic strip Peanuts when he said, ‘I used to have a towel when I was 3-4 years old and I would always carry it around. It was like my toy.’ But that does not detract from the fact that making players sprint back to their chairs for a wipe down in the middle of a game is overly cautious considering the International Cricket Council (ICC) has cleared sweat as an acceptable — non-infectious — medium to polish cricket balls.

Taking home the biggest award of the night was former cricketer, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who was felicitated with the Colonel C.K.Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. Srikkanth shared the stage with BCCI Chief Sourav Ganguly and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.

However, one of the highlights of the evening was former cricketer Virendar Sehwag’s A-level humour which stole the show at the awards. Our very own ‘Viru’ delivered the seventh Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi lecture at the BCCI awards. The lecture was established to honour former captain of the Indian cricket team Tiger Pataudi.

Commenting on the ICC’s plan to revamp Test cricket by shortening it to four days, Sehwag said, “Chaar din ki chandni hoti hai, Test match nahi...Jal ki machli jal main hi acchi hai, bahar nikaloge toh mar jaegi (Test matches aren’t meant to last 4 days. A fish is better suited for water. It will die if taken out of its habitat).”

Taking a strong stand against ICC’s move, Sehwag, in his usual style, said, "...Test cricket ko chanda mama ke pass le jaa sakte hai. (We can take Test cricket to the moon). We can have Day-Night Test cricket. If there is a day-night Test, maybe people will come to watch game after office. Innovations should happen but within the five days. It should not be shortened" he asserted.
