Why the loveless celebrate 'black day' in South Korea
Exactly two months after Valentine’s Day, the date devoted to soppy red, comes ‘ Black Day’ in South Korea. Only the loveless celebrated this odd holiday on April 14, which is associated with being alone on Valentine’s Day. Singles celebrated by dressing in head-totoe black and gorging on the Korean version of comfort food: thick, fatty noodles coated in a salty paste.

The dish they ate is called Jajangmyeon — noodles made with black soybean paste. Many participated in Jajangmyeon eating contests, and spent the day venting about the single life. Not everyone left less lonely, but they certainly wound up with black teeth.
