Why shouldn’t men also chase glamour and sumptuousness, asks veteran designer Manish Malhotra
Indian couturier Manish Malhotra’s opening show for Lakmé Fashion Week – titled ‘Maahrumysha’ -featured many signature elements from the designer’s trademark style but updated to suit the modern, fashion-conscious millennial of today.

Designed for lighter occasions to destination weddings, ‘Maahrumysha’ comprised of flowy skirts, spectacular ivory thread work, sheer play and fabrics like cotton, silk, wool, velvet and tulle. For the men, layered bandhgalas, sharp jackets, kurtas, and trousers in jewel tones and classic shades of white, ivory, beige, ochre, grey, salmon, dominated the ramp.

“I’ve refreshed the wedding palette in a more millennial and modern way - a lot of Kashmiri hand-embroidery and the intricate threadwork. The whole collection is done in muted and vintage tones which makes it modern and glamorous, yet timeless,” said Malhotra.

Animal motifs added an edgy masculine vibe to some of the bandhgalas. The crouching tiger motif, in particular, signified power, boldness and majesty and according to the designer, emancipated the confidence of man.

Going for Bold
“My idea was that if women can be into glamour and sumptuousness, then why not men? Hence, we introduced all jewel tones, deep tones, a lot of interplay of colours, and statement making glittery motifs,” said Malhotra.

Trend Talk
“Textured cotton and textured suiting fabrics are something that will be in vogue in the impending season. With fabrics, I love velvet for men as I find it (to be) the most luxurious of all.” Malhotra also sees a big play being made for relaxed fits, texture on texture, stripes and dots while tone on tone remains mainstay. “Anti-fit will be trending as that has a younger millennial vibe.”
