High salaries in India’s top cities look impressive on paper. A Rs 25 LPA package in Bengaluru or Mumbai seems like a ticket to wealth, prestige, and a comfortable lifestyle. But chartered accountant Nitin Kaushik warns that the reality is far more complicated. In a detailed post on X, Kaushik breaks down how urban work culture, long commutes, and hidden personal costs can turn even high-paying jobs into a drain on health, time, and overall life equity. What appears as wealth may be quietly eroding the most valuable resources: your well-being and family time.

CA Nitin Kaushik points out that the obsession with a Rs 25 LPA CTC often overlooks the true cost of working in major cities. High salaries carry hidden expenses—commutes, stress, and lifestyle inflation—that reduce the actual value of the compensation. Jobs in Bengaluru and Mumbai often demand enduring two-hour daily traffic snarls, effectively consuming over seven per cent of an urban professional’s productive life. When factored in, the prestige of a high-rise office begins to resemble a liability rather than an asset.

According to CA, many professionals treat physiological stability and family well-being as secondary. He highlights a harsh reality: a premium salary is not always synonymous with wealth. Roles that demand liquidating personal health and time just to maintain a high-cost lifestyle can result in a slow-motion bankruptcy of life’s most valuable resources.

Comparatively, he said that jobs paying 30 per cent less but with lower hidden costs may actually improve net wellbeing and long-term returns. Long hours in traffic, stress, and sacrificed family time quietly erode the very equity that matters most: health, stability, and quality of life. High salaries are impressive, but they come at a cost that many professionals underestimate until it is too late.
