Why millennials are abandoning their work desks & opting for dining or bar spaces to work

Millennials prefer dining/ bar spaces to work unlike the older generation who used such spaces for socialising and collaborations.
The case of the missing employee from his/ her desk has been cracked. According to a recent global survey carried out by an office furniture company, employees in India and China spend “far less” time at their dedicated work desks in comparison with other countries. However, it’s part of an attitude shift that organisations are witnessing across. Overall, despite 77 per cent of the employees having an exclusive work desk, majority of them (87 per cent) spend two to four hours daily working somewhere else.

Around 51 per cent of the people wanted to break the monotony of working in the same place all day, while 43 per cent reasoned that informal spaces enabled them to build more trust with colleagues and teammates.


Some of the other reasons given were a want of quiet spaces for privacy and better ergonomics. Among the informal settings, millennials preferred dining/ bar spaces to work unlike the older generation who used such spaces for socialising and collaborations.
