For years, moving to a big city for work has been seen as a natural step toward better opportunities. But what happens when someone is already living in one of India’s biggest job hubs and still chooses to relocate to another metro? That question has triggered a lively online debate after a Delhi-based social media user challenged the logic behind shifting from NCR to Bengaluru for employment. His post struck a chord with professionals weighing salary, lifestyle, ambition, and quality of life.

Delhi-based man, Akshay, said he struggles to understand why people who already live in major metropolitan regions choose to move to another metro city for work. According to him, relocation makes complete sense when someone comes from a smaller town, non-metro city, or village in search of better prospects. In such cases, moving can open doors to industries, networks, salaries, and career tracks that may not exist locally.

What he questioned, however, was a different kind of migration, one between two already developed urban centres. Akshay specifically referred to people from NCR, especially those living in Gurgaon, who move to Bengaluru for jobs. In his view, Gurgaon already offers the advantages many professionals relocate for in the first place: access to companies, corporate infrastructure, urban conveniences, and a large employment ecosystem.

He wondered what incentive remains strong enough for someone to leave that setup behind, especially when the move also brings fresh costs such as rent, relocation expenses, and the stress of rebuilding day-to-day life in another expensive city.

His post quickly sparked discussion because it touched on a common but rarely examined reality of modern careers. Professionals today do not only move from smaller places to larger ones. Many move between top-tier cities in search of something more specific. For some, that “something more” is industry concentration.

Internet reacts

Internet users offered sharply different takes on the debate. One person pointed out that relocation may simply be necessary when suitable jobs in a specific field are not available in NCR. Another argued that Gurgaon is often overrated on cost and convenience, claiming everyday food and beverage options can be more expensive there than in Bengaluru, while Bengaluru’s local markets, colony markets, and street food offer better value with wider choices. A third user took a broader philosophical view, saying many people are rarely satisfied with what they already have, whether it relates to jobs, cities, countries, relationships, professions, pollution, environment, safety, or other aspects of life.
