Why King Ramses II is making headlines?
The Egyptian emperor?
Yeah

What about him?
Parts of a statue, thought to be king Ramses II, were found at a wasteland, near the ruins of Ramses II's temple in the ancient city of Heliopolis.

You mean one of the gigantic ones from Simbel?
No. Those still stand tall.

A 29 ft high statue, weighing 8.5 tonne, was found by an Egyptian-German archaeological team. It was partially submerged in water, and had split into a number of parts.

But are we sure it’s Ramses?
Well, on Friday, Egypt's antiquities minister Khaled el-Anani did announce that the statue might be Ramses’ or Psamtek I — the emperor who ruled Egypt between 664 and 610BC. El-Anani explained that the statue's back pillar preserved one of the five names of king Psamtek.

That’s a bummer!
But even if it belongs to Psamtek, it is the largest statue of the Late Period that was ever discovered in Egypt.

The statue's parts would be pieced together and restored at the Egyptian museum in central Cairo. It will then be moved to the yet-to open Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids.

So we read up on Psamtek?
We cannot entirely rule out Ramses here. After all, he was famous for stealing other kings’ monuments and carving his name on them.
