Why is Marvel bringing Avengers: Endgame back to theatres seven years later? How 5 minutes bridge story lead to Doomsday

For most films, a theatrical re-release is a chance to revisit a familiar story. For Marvel Studios, Avengers: Endgame Encore is being positioned as something more: a return to one of the MCU's biggest chapters while laying the groundwork for what comes next. Seven years after Avengers: Endgame concluded the Infinity Saga in 2019, Marvel is bringing the blockbuster back to cinemas on September 25, 2026. But this time, audiences are getting additional footage and an exclusive connection to Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to arrive in December.

The timing is significant. Endgame remains widely available on streaming platforms, so simply putting the same film back in theatres would offer little that fans could not already access at home. The Encore edition instead turns nostalgia into a way of reconnecting audiences with the MCU ahead of its next major crossover.

Endgame vs Endgame Encore: What is the difference?

The biggest reason behind the re-release is the gap between Endgame and Doomsday. Marvel is using a film that remains deeply familiar to its audience to establish connections with the upcoming Avengers story. Cinema Express described the strategy as positioning Endgame as a “stepping stone” towards the next major crossover. The re-release includes additional footage and an exclusive look at Doomsday, while screenings are also being offered in formats including IMAX, 4DX and Marvel Studios' Infinity Vision.


The approach also allows Marvel to bring the theatrical MCU experience back into focus. Doomsday is scheduled for December 18 and features Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise, this time as Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark/Iron Man. There is already evidence that Marvel's decision is resonating with audiences in India.

Moneycontrol reported that Endgame Encore had generated strong advance bookings ahead of its release, with exhibitors describing demand closer to that of a new major release. PVR INOX's Kamal Gianchandani told the publication that the chain expected around 3,500-4,000 shows a day and called the scale unprecedented for a re-release.

How does Endgame Encore connect to Doomsday?

Reports following the theatrical release describe four new pieces of footage involving characters and concepts including Loki, Hulk, Doctor Doom and the Time Variance Authority. The scenes expand the story beyond the original ending and establish links to the multiverse storyline leading into Doomsday.

The new material also revisits Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter's post-Endgame life, while other additions introduce Doctor Doom and developments involving the TVA. That makes the re-release particularly relevant for fans trying to understand how Marvel intends to move from the events of Endgame towards Doomsday.

3. Doctor Doom material: One of the post-credits additions introduces Doctor Doom, establishing a link between the returning Robert Downey Jr. and his new MCU role.

4. TVA and multiverse developments: Another sequence expands the TVA storyline and shows the consequences of events across multiple realities, setting up the larger stakes of Doomsday.

5. Doomsday preview: Select premium presentations also include exclusive Avengers: Doomsday material, giving audiences an additional reason to watch the film in theatres rather than at home.

Why bring Endgame back now?

Ultimately, Marvel is using Endgame Encore to do two jobs at once. It brings audiences back to a film that already has enormous nostalgic value while introducing story elements that belong to the next phase of the Avengers saga. The timing also gives Doomsday a theatrical runway before its December release. Rather than treating Endgame as a finished chapter, Encore reframes parts of its ending as a doorway into what comes next.
