Why dentists are making headlines

Dentists? Gives me the Heebie-Jeebies…

Then this case ain’t going to help.

What happened?

A man in the UK lost the ability to create new memories after his routine check up with a dentist. He cannot remember anything beyond 90 minutes.

What? How?

Experts say that bilateral damage to a part of his brain caused profound amnesia.

So is it like a ‘memento’ moment?

Not funny but yes, he wakes up every day believing he is still in the military, stationed abroad and each morning he believes it is the same day of his 2005 root-canal appointment.

Did he forget everything?

No, he can remember his childhood, relationships and his children, up to the year 2005, but can't remember what happened more than an hour and a half ago.

How does he manage the day?

He uses GPS to get around the neighbourhood, though he is always surprised his family is not the same age they were the day of the dental appointment.

What are doctors saying?

He was assessed for any brain damage, but his CT, MRI and SPECT scans all came back normal.

That doesn’t sound too good…

Yes, especially since he has no psychiatric history, no acute stress that would have been at the level that usually initiates anterograde amnesia.
