Why Shreya Ghoshal-Arijit Singh are silent, asks TMC leader after singer Sanjay Chakraborty's arrest in child molestation case

Singer-composer Sanjay Chakraborty, the brother of renowned musician Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, has been arrested in Mumbai on charges of sexually assaulting a minor. The arrest, executed by the Kolkata Police with the help of Mumbai authorities, has sparked public debate, especially following remarks made by Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh.

Details of the Alleged Assault

Chakraborty, a prominent music teacher, was taken into custody after a police complaint was filed by the victim’s family, alleging the assault. He has been remanded to police custody until November 18, 2024, by the Alipore court.

Chakraborty faces charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with sections of the Indian Penal Code related to molestation. As investigations continue, Kolkata Police are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering more evidence. The victim’s family is expected to be questioned further as part of the ongoing inquiry.

However, the case has drawn attention not only due to its severity but also due to the apparent silence of certain prominent singers. Kunal Ghosh, a spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress, took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to question why renowned singers such as Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, who have previously been vocal on social and political issues, have remained silent regarding this arrest. Ghosh wrote, "Will Arijit, Shreya, and Abhijit, who often speak out on incidents in Bengal, remain silent on Sanjay Chakraborty’s alleged misdeeds? Are they selective revolutionaries?"

This comment raised questions about whether these artists are picking and choosing which social issues to address, especially when incidents occur outside of West Bengal. Ghosh’s remarks echo a sentiment shared by many who feel that the silence of such influential figures could be seen as selective in nature, with the focus often placed on regional issues rather than broader, national concerns.


Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, both celebrated figures in the Indian music industry, have previously shown their support for causes related to social justice. Notably, Shreya Ghoshal had canceled a concert in Kolkata in response to the tragic rape and murder case of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Hospital earlier this year. She had also publicly supported women’s rights by releasing a song addressing violence against women.

Ghosh has urged these artists to make a statement, questioning whether they would remain silent in the face of serious allegations that impact the music community at large.
