Who is Shobinaw Satyaa? He was an assistant director one day, then turned lead actor playing Neem Karoli Baba overnight. How small-budget film Hanuman Ansh beat Dhurandhar 2?
Hanuman Ansh achieved significant box-office success on a small budget. The film's earnings surpassed 20 times its production cost, showing a high return. Shobinaw Satyaa unexpectedly stepped into the lead role after the original actor fell ill....

But the film's unusual journey does not end with its box-office numbers. It's the lead actor of Hanuman Ansh - Shobinaw Satyaa, who had not even planned to play the lead. He was working as an assistant director on the film when circumstances suddenly pushed him in front of the camera as Neem Karoli Baba.
Shobinaw Satyaa did not begin Hanuman Ansh expecting to become its leading man. He was working behind the camera as an assistant director when a sudden development on set changed the course of the film, and his own career. Within a matter of hours, Satyaa found himself preparing to play the central character, spiritual figure Neem Karoli Baba. What followed was an unlikely journey from a nervous replacement to the face of a film that has surprised the box office.
From assistant director to playing Neem Karoli Baba on-screen
Satyaa recalled the dramatic change in an interview with India Today during the release of Hanuman Ansh. He said he had been working as an assistant director on the film when the original lead actor suddenly fell ill. With the set already ready, the crew present and considerable work already put into the day's shoot, director Vishal Chaturvedi did not want to halt production. The solution was unexpected: Satyaa was considered for the lead.
The decision came with very little time for preparation. Chaturvedi then put him through a five-hour test. "I kept thinking, what will happen? What will the world say? But director sir calmed me down. He told me that thinking about all this was not my responsibility, but his. It happened very suddenly and I was blank," Satyaa told AajTak.
Taking on the role also brought its own set of worries. Satyaa admitted that he was concerned about whether viewers would accept him as Neem Karoli Baba. Speaking about his state of mind, he said he was thinking like a journalist at the time, imagining the questions audiences might ask about the casting and whether they would feel that he was the right person to portray Baba.
Chaturvedi, however, helped him remain calm. Satyaa said the director told him that worrying about how the world would react was not his responsibility. His job was to focus on performing the role.
A role he sees as a spiritual calling
For Satyaa, the casting eventually came to feel less like an accident and more like something that was meant to happen. The actor has been a devotee of Neem Karoli Baba since 2009 and has followed a spiritual path for several years. He also began observing a Tuesday fast for Lord Hanuman in 2018 and later adopted a vegetarian lifestyle.
Speaking about how he landed the role, Satyaa described the experience in spiritual terms. He said that when a divine force is shaping someone's journey, there are moments when a person has to stop overthinking and simply surrender. For him, being chosen to portray Neem Karoli Baba felt like one of those moments.
From a Rs 10 lakh opening to Rs 54 crore
While Satyaa's casting story is unusual, Hanuman Ansh has also taken an equally surprising route at the box office. The Vishal Chaturvedi directorial venture was made on a reported budget of just Rs 2 crore. It opened with approximately Rs 10 lakh on its first day, a figure that initially suggested a modest theatrical run. The film did not have the star power, enormous promotional campaign or massive release scale normally associated with major Hindi hits.
But the audience response changed its fortunes.
Instead of collapsing after its opening, Hanuman Ansh gradually picked up through positive word-of-mouth. Viewers who connected with its spiritual subject continued recommending it, allowing the film to attract more audiences over the following days and weeks.
According to Sacnilk, the film has collected around Rs 54.74 crore net in India, while its domestic gross stands at approximately Rs 64.54 crore. For a film made for around Rs 2 crore, the theatrical earnings represent more than 20 times its reported production budget.
On a simple production-cost comparison, that amounts to an extraordinary return of roughly 2,000 per cent.
How Hanuman Ansh beats Dhurandhar 2 on ROI
This is where the film's performance gets particularly interesting. In terms of total collections, there is no real contest between Hanuman Ansh and Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar 2. The latter is a massive commercial blockbuster.According to Sacnilk, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge has earned around Rs 1,149.30 crore net in India, with its domestic gross at approximately Rs 1,375.39 crore and worldwide gross at around Rs 1,813.39 crore.
However, the picture changes when the films are compared according to how much they earned against their production budgets.
Dhurandhar 2 was made on a reported budget of around Rs 125 crore. Based on that figure, its theatrical earnings amount to roughly 10 times its production cost. Hanuman Ansh, meanwhile, has earned more than 20 times its reported Rs 2 crore budget.
That means the small spiritual drama comes out ahead on a percentage-return basis, even though Dhurandhar 2 has generated vastly more money in absolute terms.
The two films therefore represent very different kinds of box-office success. Dhurandhar 2 achieved blockbuster status through scale, star power and enormous audience demand. Hanuman Ansh started almost unnoticed and built its business slowly, turning a Rs 2 crore production into one of the year's most striking low-budget success stories.
