The Andhra Pradesh government has suspended three senior IPS officers following an inquiry into allegations made by Mumbai-based actress Kadambari Jethwani. These suspensions come after Jethwani accused them of harassment, allegedly instigated by a film producer and political leader of YSR Congress, according to news reports. The controversy centers around accusations that Jethwani and her family were unlawfully arrested and harassed. Former intelligence chief P Sitharama Anjaneyulu (DG rank), former Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kranti Rana Tata (IG rank) and Vishal Gunni (SP rank), then Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vijayawada), were suspended after an inquiry revealed their role in the alleged harassment of the model.

According to her IMDb profile, model-actress Kadambari Jethwani, 28, studied at elite schools in Ahmedabad and earned a Visharad in Bharatnatyam. After moving to Mumbai for her mother’s job, a chance meeting with a director led to her debut in the Hindi film "Sadda Adda." She later starred in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and Punjabi films including Ouija (Kannada), Aata (Telugu), I Love Me (Malayalam) and Oh Yaara Ainvayi Ainvayi Lut Gaya (Punjabi).

Why were the IPS officers suspended

One of the suspended IPS officer is accused of misusing his position and giving verbal orders for Jethwani’s arrest before a formal crime had even been recorded. It is alleged that he instructed the other officers to take the actress into custody, setting off a chain of actions that have now been called into question. His suspension is based on allegations of grave misconduct and abuse of power.


One of the officer is facing suspension for carrying out these oral instructions without following proper legal procedures. On January 31, 2024, he allegedly ordered the arrest of Jethwani, even though an official First Information Report (FIR) wasn’t filed until February 2. Additionally, he reportedly arranged travel for officers to Mumbai to execute the arrest without obtaining written orders or conducting a thorough investigation. This act of negligence has been cited as a serious breach of duty.

The inquiry that led to these suspensions was initiated by Director General of Police Dwarka Tirumala Rao after Jethwani lodged a formal complaint online with the Andhra Pradesh police. She personally recorded her statement with the Vijayawada police on August 30, 2024, detailing the harassment she and her family endured. Home Minister V. Anitha had previously stated that the government was treating the case with the seriousness it deserved, signaling its commitment to investigate the matter thoroughly.

Jethwani alleged that her ordeal began when the political leader-film producer filed a case of cheating and forgery against her and her family. He accused the actress of fabricating documents to illegally acquire land and extorting Rs 5 lakh from him. Following these accusations, the a case was registered against against Jethwani and her parents. Acting on these charges, a police team traveled to Mumbai, arrested the family, and brought them to Vijayawada, where they were remanded in custody. However, they were eventually released on bail.

Jethwani has strongly denied the allegations and said that it was for a retaliation for a case she had filed against him at Bandra Kurla Police Station in Mumbai. She alleged that the producer, along with the police, conspired to force her into withdrawing the case. According to Jethwani, several high-ranking police officers were involved in the unlawful actions against her, acting in coordination with the producer.

Speaking to NDTV, the model-actress said a false case was foisted on her to threaten her to withdraw a complaint she lodged against a top corporate honcho in Mumbai and that she was kept in prison in AP for 42 days before being released on bail.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to justice in the harassment case involving Bollywood actress and model Kadambari Jethwani. She emphasized that no individual involved in the case would be exempt from accountability. (With Agency Inputs)
