Japanese pop singer Hirata Runa dies at 8

Runa, who was a trainee member of the Japanese girls’ idol group DIANNA Project, died at around 4 a.m. local time on September 25, her family announced on X. Her talent agency later confirmed that she died from myocarditis resulting from influenza. According to People, the young performer had appeared at a concert on September 20, only days before her death. Following that performance, she posted a photograph of herself smiling and thanked her supporters, writing that she had enjoyed the day.

The DIANNA Project announced the death on September 28 and expressed gratitude to fans and others who had supported Runa. The agency also asked the public to respect the family's privacy and refrain from individual inquiries or questions about the circumstances surrounding her death. A private funeral was held with close relatives in attendance.

What is myocarditis?

Myocarditis refers to inflammation of the heart muscle. While it can have several causes, viral infections are among them. Mayo Clinic reveals myocarditis can affect the heart's ability to pump blood and may cause symptoms including chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue and rapid or irregular heartbeats. In children, difficulty breathing, fainting, fever and abnormal heart rhythms can also occur.

JAMA similarly reports that viral infections, including influenza, can be associated with acute myocarditis. The medical journal notes that patients may experience flu-like symptoms before the heart inflammation develops. The American Heart Association has also documented cases in which influenza-related myocarditis became life-threatening, underscoring that complications involving the heart can occur following an infection that is otherwise commonly encountered.

Family remembers Runa as an ‘eternal idol’

They said that around one-third of her life had been spent pursuing her dream of becoming an idol and asked people to keep her memory alive as an “eternal idol.”Her final performance has now taken on a poignant significance. Just days before her death, the child was on stage doing what she loved, followed by a social media message expressing happiness over the experience.
