Dolly Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver spent more than 20 years working as her head of security and was the family member who announced her death in August. But months after the country music legend’s passing, Seaver found himself at the centre of a legal dispute involving her estate. The case included allegations of threats, intimidation and an attempt to obtain money. However, the latest development is that Parton’s estate has moved to drop the lawsuit.

Who is Dolly Parton's nephew? Why is he in the news?

Bryan Seaver is Cassie Parton's son, one of Dolly Parton’s 11 siblings. He worked as his aunt’s head of security for more than two decades and also ran a private security company called Squadron Augmented Protection Services. Bryan came into the public eye in August when he announced Parton’s death in a video shared on her social media accounts. He introduced himself as the singer’s nephew and said the family had asked him to share the news. According to the Los Angeles Times, Bryan Seaver said in the video that announcing her death was something Dolly Parton had asked him to do years earlier.

What is the Dolly Parton estate lawsuit about?

The dispute began after Bryan and his security company were dismissed from their roles following Dolly Parton’s death on August 25. Her estate management company, She's Alive LLC, filed a lawsuit in September, accusing him of threatening people connected to the estate and trying to pressure them for money. The complaint, filed by Dolly Parton’s longtime manager Danny Nozell, alleged that Bryan Seaver sent threatening messages to employees, lawyers and business partners. It also claimed that his behaviour created a “culture of fear” among people working with the estate.

The estate accused him of making threats against Parton’s business interests, including saying he would “destroy the entire brand”, according to reporting by the Associated Press. However, Bryan denied the allegations. In a court response, he argued the private messages were taken out of context. He also said his security company had been owed around $251,000 for services already provided and that he had since paid it.

Why has Dolly Parton’s estate dropped the lawsuit?

On November 5, She's Alive LLC filed a request to dismiss the case against Seaver and his security company voluntarily. The Associated Press reported that a court filing from the previous day mentioned an agreement between the two sides, but did not explain its terms.

Bryan Seaver's attorney said he was grateful to put the misunderstanding behind him and wanted the family to grieve peacefully while protecting Dolly Parton's legacy. For now, the lawsuit has been withdrawn, but the filing does not mean the allegations were proven or that the dispute was resolved through a court ruling.
