Long before Alaska became synonymous with oil, pipelines and vast petroleum reserves, keeping the lights on in the far north demanded a very different fuel: wood. In 1904, just a few years after gold discoveries transformed Fairbanks, the Northern Commercial Company built a combined heat and power plant that consumed roughly 8,500 cords of wood every year. The plant did more than provide electricity — it heated part of downtown so effectively that early Fairbanks residents earned an unusual nickname: the “steam-heated pioneers”.

Electricity Arrived With Alaska's Industrial Boom

Alaska's journey towards electrification began well before it became a US state in 1959. Mining, fishing and other resource industries created an early need for power. According to energy and environmental historian Philip Wight of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Juneau was using hydroelectricity to power its community and mining operations only about a decade after Thomas Edison's Pearl Street Station began operating in Manhattan in 1882. The Gold Rush accelerated Alaska's appetite for energy. EBSCO Research notes that gold discoveries in Juneau, the Klondike and Fairbanks brought tens of thousands of newcomers north, while wood remained a vital source of fuel.

Fairbanks Turned Thousands of Cords of Wood Into Power

Fairbanks offered one of the more remarkable examples of early ingenuity. In 1904, the Northern Commercial Company constructed a wood-fired combined heat and power plant. According to Wight, it burned about 8,500 cords of wood annually while supplying heat and electricity to a small central section of downtown Fairbanks. The system meant that residents could benefit from both electricity and steam heat in an environment where winter temperatures could make reliable energy particularly valuable. It also produced the memorable description of residents as “those steam-heated pioneers.”


Old Engines Later Powered Entire Alaska Towns

The Fairbanks plant was only one chapter in a much larger story. Alaska's enormous distances and isolated settlements meant conventional power systems were not always practical. Wight writes that Alaskans frequently improvised with whatever machinery was available. Old Caterpillar tractor engines left from mining operations or the Second World War were repurposed to generate electricity for entire communities, sometimes for decades. Some of that equipment has continued to serve as backup generation.

Rural electrification also arrived surprisingly late in some places. EBSCO reports that many rural communities did not receive electricity until the 1970s, while the University of Alaska Fairbanks notes that Alaska's final village was electrified as late as the 1980s.

From Burning Wood to Renewable Power

Alaska's energy story eventually shifted towards oil, natural gas and an increasingly diverse mix of renewable resources. Hydropower now plays an important role. EBSCO reports that it accounted for more than 20% of Alaska's electricity generation in 2023. Meanwhile, five major hydroelectric facilities developed with state oil revenues in the 1980s and early 1990s collectively displace an estimated 40 million gallons of diesel annually, according to Wight.

The technology may have changed dramatically, but the challenge that shaped Alaska's earliest power systems remains familiar: how do you deliver affordable, dependable energy across one of America's largest and most difficult landscapes More than a century after Fairbanks burned thousands of cords of wood to produce electricity and heat, Alaska is still answering that question only now with hydropower, wind, solar, batteries, geothermal energy and other technologies added to the toolbox.
