When Ustad Amjad Ali Khan reminisced about his meeting with Prince Aga Khan
Performances by musicians who play ancient instruments are always a treat to attend. But what makes it even more special is when Amjad Ali Khan takes in that performance. At a recent Mumbai event organised by the Aga Khan Music Initiative along with Asia Society, the sarod maestro was thrilled by a performer from Afghanistan, who played the Afghan rubab. Remarking that the stringed instrument was an ancestor of the sarod, Khan also recounted how he was fortunate to have met Prince Aga Khan. The two met at the Rashtrapati Bhavan for a dinner when the 16th century garden tomb of Humayun was restored and inaugurated in 2013. That’s some musical history to ponder over.
