When the country's best legal minds came together to celebrate Riyaz Chagla's Bombay HC appointment
It was a gathering of some of the best legal minds from Mumbai and Delhi. The occasion: to celebrate the appointment of Iqbal and Roshan Chagla's son Riyaz, 47, as a judge of the Bombay High Court.

On Sunday last, about 300-350 people - including retired and serving judges and senior lawyers - toasted the new judge at south Mumbai's uppercrust NCPA restaurant, Amadeus, at a sit-down celebratory lunch.

The Chagla family has deep roots in the city's judicial history. The family patriarch Mahommedali Currim Chagla served in the Bombay High Court as the first chief justice for 10 years from 1948 to 1958. His son Iqbal too went on to build a formidable practice, and many senior lawyers have embarked on their career from his chambers. His once understudies are now senior lawyers in high places, and were present in full strength at the party.

Also, present were Iqbal and Roshan's daughter Rohiqa and her husband Cyrus Mistry, who is currently locked in a legal battle against the Tata Group. Those in the circles know that the senior Chagla is providing legal direction to son-in-law Mistry, with his team strategising on the road ahead.
