Shah Rukh Khan was once a victim of xenophobia
Sometimes, even global fame offers no shield against prejudice rooted in fear and suspicion. In the years following the September 11 attacks, heightened security measures across the United States often led to uncomfortable and unfair experiences for many travelers. One such incident involved Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, whose international stature did little to spare him from being singled out at Newark Airport. The episode was later revisited by Congress Rajya Sabha MP and BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, who shared how he intervened to help the actor during that tense moment.

Shukla told ANI that Khan personally reached out to him when the situation unfolded. At the time, airport security protocols were extremely rigid, with passengers frequently subjected to checks based solely on their names. According to Shukla, it was common for authorities to halt individuals, isolate them, and thoroughly inspect their belongings without offering explanations. In the charged atmosphere after 9/11, questioning security personnel was not an option, as their authority was absolute and their procedures uncompromising.

He further explained that the legal framework in place was so severe that even someone as prominent as Shah Rukh Khan was not exempt from scrutiny. On the day of the incident, which coincided with the festival of Janmashtami, Shukla received a call informing him that Khan had been detained and made to wait for nearly two hours. The actor conveyed that he was being held without clarity or justification, reflecting the distress and helplessness of the situation.

While Shukla chose not to reveal the specifics of whom he contacted or the steps he took behind the scenes, the outcome was swift. Within a short span of time, Khan informed him that the issue had been resolved, his luggage released, and he was free to continue his journey. The rapid resolution highlighted the role of intervention, even as it underscored how arbitrary such detentions could be.

In the aftermath of the incident, Shah Rukh Khan described the experience as deeply humiliating. Years later, he elaborated on how unsettling it was to be stranded at an airport for hours without cause. Despite the discomfort, he maintained a balanced perspective, acknowledging the global climate of fear that prevailed during that period. He expressed that if similar threats existed in India, strengthening security would be essential. Rather than harbor resentment, he viewed the episode as a reflection of the times, emphasizing the need to accept reality, remain prepared, and move forward without bitterness.
