Ratan Tata had earlier said that he was very much fascinated by automobiles and among all the Tata companies, he spent more time at Tata Motors. Ratan Tata, a graduate of Cornell University (1962) and Harvard Business School, had an unconventional career path. Although recruited by IBM, he chose to begin at the ground level within his family’s Tata Steel, working in labor-intensive roles, including shoveling limestone. Over the next three decades, he gained extensive experience across multiple Tata companies, ultimately succeeding J.R.D. Tata as Chairman of the Tata Group in 1991, a role he held until 2012.



Recognizing the growing potential of India’s middle class, Tata Motors shifted focus from industrial products to consumer vehicles. In 1998, the company launched the Tata Indica, the first car entirely designed and built in India, which quickly became a best-seller.
