Sci-fi has long spun scary scenarios in which robots enslave the human race, and recent reports suggest that life might ominously be imitating art. Computer programs monitor employees, second by second in real time, and assess their individual performances.
In effect, these cyber-snoops have become super-bosses who rate and reward, or punish, human endeavour by increasingly taking charge of the hiring and firing of the staffers, who often can’t even appeal to any higher authority. Isaac Asimov postulated that robots, powered with artificial intelligence (AI), can never harm humans.
The problem with AI is that it can on occasion be just artificial, as underscored by the story of the passengers on a pilotless aircraft who received a recorded message from the cockpit, “This is a fully automated flight in which there is no chance of human error and nothing can go wrong… nothing can go wrong… nothing can go wrong…

Creator, a burger restaurant that opened last year in San Francisco, is home to two sedansized robots each of which can churn out 120 burgers an hour. Each robot is reportedly equipped with 350 sensors, 50 actuators and 20 computers together which allow it to grind the meat, shape the burgers, slice the tomatoes, grate cheese and dispense mustard. Robots are coming to take over valet parking tasks. London’s Gatwick Airport recently collaborated with Stanley Robotics to trial robots that valet park passengers’ cars. The trial will run from the second half of 2019 to early 2020 wherein passengers will have to leave their car at the airport’s ‘parking station’ without handing over keys. The robot will lift up the car and store it in a secure car park. The service will have access to users’ flight details so that the robot can bring back the car when the passenger returns.
